Sounds simple, but it is the first thing the city
dwellers crave to do when they arrive. Homer's
serenity and grander uplifts and rejuvenates our
entire being. Directions: Either head down the hill
and Keep going straight to the end of the Homer
Spit, or, from the cabins take a Right on the
Sterling Highway. Go straight at the Pioneer
intersection. One block past intersection turn Right
on Main Street. One Block down take first Left. This
is the access Road to the beach. Play catch on the
manicured lawn, explore the trail to town and cook
up some barbecue in the firepit under the large
pavilion. Toilet facilities are provided. Guided
beach walks are also available all summer through
the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, (check
at the Visitors Center or call 235-6961). Low tide
is the best time to walk. Use the tide tables on
page 2 of the Homer News or pick up a tide table at
one of the local businesses. In the early days the
homesteaders had to use the beach at low tide,
because there were not any roads. (Top of

If you come in late July or August don't miss
this. You can take the berries to a fish-packing
store and they will freeze, pack and ship them home
for you. See Tours & Sightseeing section for good

Due to the abundance of migratory paths that
intersect here in the spring, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Department chose Homer as a monitoring
station. The city also has an Annual Shorebird
Festival, usually held on the second week in May.

annual Wooden Boat Festival is held on the Homer
Spit. Approximately 100,000 seabirds pass through

This area is lush, and reminiscent of
southeastern Alaska's rain forest. Unique twisted
rock formations line the beaches. Extensive trail
system across the bay show you the best paths to
alpine terrain and picturesque lakes. Pick up a map

Highway on the Right, past the Pioneer Ave.

This is a pristine land preserve of 126 acres
donated by naturalist Carl E. Wynn. Many free
activities are offered to enrich appreciation for
Homer's precious natural treasures. Call:

on Pioneer go past blinking red lights (this is
where the road changes names to become East End
Road) Go .5 miles and take left up East Hill Road.
When you reach the top of this hill bear Right at
the only "Y" ) The name of this becomes Skyline
Drive. The sign for Wynn's Nature center is 2.5
miles past this intersection, on the Left. This is one of Alaska's wheelchair accessible
trails. Meadows teeming with wildflowers, spruce
forests, and grassy meadows from the Carl E. Wynn

Ask any cross-country skiers in Alaska where
their favorite trails are…, "Homer!" would be the
unanimous response. The local ski club has 3
established trail systems: Baycrest Trail Directions: (ONLY one mile from
Alaskan Adventure Cabins!) From Alaskan Adventure
Cabins Take Left Sterling Highway Right on Rodgers
Loop look for sign on northeast side of the Rodgers
Loop. Olsen Mountain Trail Directions: Take East Hill Road
and bear Right at "Y" East Hill now becomes Skyline
Drive. After 2.5 miles note the Wynns Nature Center
on the Left (a GREAT place to visit, find restroom
facilities and warm up) and keep going 2.5 miles to
Olsen Mountain Road. Turn left on Olsen Mt. Rd.
Trailhead is ¼ mile on left. Mc Niel Canyon Trail Directions: Pioneer Avenue
changes name at the blinking red light and becomes
East End Rd. Trail access at the McNiel Canyon
School Parking Lot. This is the only elementary
school on the left side, at approx. 15 miles out on
East End Road. Snowshoeing is welcome on the same three trails made
available for cross-country skiing. (Top of

The Duncan House on Pioneer Ave. offers fantastic homestyle meals in a Fifties diner atmosphere. To
really blend in with the locals you must have a cup
of espresso at Espresso Express. These coffee

have heard many a solution to all the world
problems. Do you notice a scent of coffee in the air
as you walk through town? Homer has it's own coffee
roastery located at Captain's Coffee behind
Wild
Berry Products on Pioneer Ave. Lunch and Dinner: Check the local phone book or ask
friendly local will inform you of many marvelous
establishments. Instead of getting a limousine to go
to dinner, try cruising across the breathtaking Kachemak Bay. As a teenager would put it, "This is
way cool!" There are two restaurant staffed by
gourmet chefs, Otter Beach Resort and Halibut Cove
Resort. If you want to make a full day of it, go
early in the day and do some kayaking and hiking

Pick up a "Homer News" and a "Homer Tribune" at a
newsstand (In front of the grocery stores). There
you will find a section on the back page of the
"Homer News announcing "Homer's Best Bets" for
entertainment . A weekly calendar of events is in
"The Homer Tribune" under the section "Dateline
Kachemak Bay." These also include entertainment

The ultimate Homer Alaska experience. You'll

historical treasures no visit to Homer is complete
without this. In the summer you will find a
wonderful botanical garden featuring the native
flora. If you have children be sure to go to the
museum when they are feeding the octopus. They'll

senses. Discover why the original settlers fell in
